While the technical demands are frustrating, this can be easily forgiven to enjoy this brilliant strategy game that is a must for every fan of the genre. XCOM 2 is a great sequel that improves the franchises gameplay without harming its essence. You can play on mid-range computers, but you will need something a bit beefier to get the most form it.Īs for the audio it remains basically unchanged, with the same meaty sounds in combat and only slight variation on the original music to add some drama. Took a recording of a single mission in which all my soldiers are using the Helldivers Voice Pack I made :)You can find it here. Obviously, the improved visuals demand higher system requirements. While the style of its characters and scenarios remain similar, the level of detail, animation, and environments look far superior. X-Com 2 looks far better than its predecessor. As in the first game, the difficulty gradually increases as you progress – ensuring that emerging unscathed from a late game mission with all your troops intact will be a feat reserved for the best commanders. All of which will be good news to strategy fans. Through all these changes, the best elements of the original XCOM remain, such as the cover system and choice of skills. Turn limits change the pace of combat, new scenarios inject variety, cover can be destroyed, and there is a greater variety of enemies all with improved AI. The changes made by the developer, Firaxis, are subtle but powerful. In mission, the turn-based combat still reigns supreme. Thus, your options in combat are far higher. This impacts both combat and management, because where as previously you only had to manage four unit types and their skills, there are now many more – all of whom must be upgraded, trained, and managed in mission. Soldiers and resource management is also more efficient.Īnother striking change is the variety of soldiers. A tedious aspect of XCOM: Enemy Unknown was managing radars across the world – but this is a problem the Avenger completely removes. One of the bigger changes to the base management in XCOM 2 is that, rather than acting from an underground military facility, you now operate out of a hijacked alien ship known as the Avenger. As in the first game, there are two distinct elements of play: base management and combat missions. XCOM: Enemy Unknown offered excellent turn-based gameplay, and XCOM 2 only refines and improves on this while keeping its core essence. The designers at Firaxis have carefully added a host of little details that players might not ever see, all adding towards making the Avenger and the world of XCOM feel like a real, lived. Leaping into XCOM 2’s first missions, which doubles as a tutorial, you’re are treated to the game’s history and the basics of combat to prepare you for the battles ahead. XCOM 2 Commanders are used to getting a bird’s eye view of the action, watching over their soldiers and the Avenger from a tactically advantageous distance. IGN gave it a 9/10, saying it "isn’t the prettiest game you can play on PS4, PS3 or Vita, but Helldivers is one of the most exhilarating, and you’ll get all three versions for the price of one."Ĭheck out everything that was announced and showed at the PlayStation Showcase right here.To free the world from the alien menace, it is necessary to once again take command of XCOM. Helldivers was largely well received, with reviewers and fans particularly praising the co-op action. "Team up with up to four friends and wreak havoc on the alien scourge that threatens the safety of your home, Super Earth. "You’ll step into the boots of an elite class of soldiers whose mission is to spread peace, liberty, and Managed Democracy using the biggest, baddest, and most explosive tools in the galaxy," said today's Helldivers 2 blog post. It immediately drew comparisons to Starship Troopers, the 1959 novel of the same name and 1997 Paul Verhoeven film adaptation, even opening with something of an homage to the latter with a propaganda video. Helldivers took place in what's called "Super Earth," and the player acts as a citizen that joins a commando team tasked with fighting aliens in various biomes.
